History of the HuB
The First Warehouse2009
We started the HuB in a 2,000 sf warehouse in 2009. We had a simple idea - "Open Door. Open Mind". We built a make-shift studio, worked on folding tables and had a blast meeting the creative minds of our town.
The Bigger Warehouse2011
When we outgrew the original warehouse, we expanded next door to a 4,000 sf warehouse. We needed more space for the cool companies we were launching (and for the bigger parties we were throwing).
In 2012, we moved the HuB to the 1680 Fruitville Building with the goal of opening our space to more people. We took over two floors (over 20,000 sf) and needed space for companies like BioLucid, HuB Studios and a growing community of coworkers.
Things we have done...
We Invented Coworking2009
In 2009, nobody understood "coworking". We were the first coworking space in Florida and one of the first in the U.S. (Yes, that is an electric van and the fist electrical car charging station in our town behind Travis)
We Give Back2014
We launched one of the most ambitious campaigns to help feed kids in our country who can't afford food during the Summer. The campaign (Skip-a-Lunch) raised over a million dollars for the charity and enough food for the year.
We Support Artists2014
Since we started we have supported local artists. One of the first artists we supported (Brian Braun) died tragically a few years ago. We never forget the spirit of local artists and how they have helped the HuB become what it is today.
We Support Local Music2013
We love music. When we launched the HuB we started a Music Festival to attract young creatives to our town. Over the next few years we have supported local bands by hosting concerts, sponsoring tours and launching a recording studio.
We Create Cool Shit2010
We launched a video production studio to tell our story. We have produced hundreds of videos ranging from webisodes (CoWork and Saratopia) to short-films, and even a few viral videos.
We Moved A Lot2012
The HuB has moved around quite a bit. As we move from place to place, we have had some interesting spaces. We have learned it really doesn't matter where we are - as long as the people we love follow us.
We Launch Businesses2009
At the core of the HuB we launch new ventures. Entrepreneur with great ideas have come to the HuB to help them launch their company. We provide everything from the development of the product, marketing strategy and execution and of course put our own money into making it happen.
We make Great Friends2015
Every year we have new creative people join the HuB, and every year we have people who move on to bigger and better things. The HuB family is in constant change and that is what makes it exciting and always organically growing.
A Wild Ride2009
The HuB has been one wild ride. For those of us that have been here since the beginning, each year brings new challenges, ventures and experiences. We will never forget the group of creatives that got this thing started.
We do Crazy Shit2013
Being creative means you have to embrace things that may make you and other people a little uncomfortable. We have always done our best as doing a few stupid things along the way. (Yes, we had a monkey roam the halls of the HuB for a day.)
We can be Controversial2014
Every once a while we may host an art show or support a cause they ruffles a few feathers, but we do it in the spirit of embracing change. We simply want our town to grow intellectually and embrace everything about the creative class.
We are a Family2009
At the HuB we have always thought of our community as our family. Many of us love coming to work every day not just because of what we are doing, but also because of who we are doing it with.
We love Ice Cream2013
Sure, the HuB may not have the same perks as Google - but every once in a while everything in the world is right. Ice cream always makes people smile.
We have a Big Network2015
The HuB goes beyond a building. We have thousands of people in the community that have supported us from the beginning. We love and appreciate all the support our fellow Saratopians have given us.
We Embrace Everyone2016
The HuB is about embracing everyone for who they are, their talents and their contribution to our community.
For our grand opening we collaborated with Ringling School of Art and Design to animate our entire building and make the HuB come alive.
We Make Fun of Ourselves2012
We never take ourselves too seriously. The HuB is a community that has been built by an amazing and ever-growing group of creatives. We are not interested in taking credit for the success, we just want to enjoy the ride.
We love our Town2013
We have always invested in our town. From economic development to sponsoring the annual New Years Eve event, we want to play a role in the future of Sarasota, Florida.
